James Evans has been photographing the people and landscape of the Big Bend and across its borders since 1988. He opened his own Evans Gallery in 1990, and has become the longest established photographer and gallery owner in this area. Evans Gallery is located in Marathon, Texas, four doors east of the Gage Hotel, between Front Street Books and The Trans Pecos Bank. It serves to display his own work and the handmade jewelry and belts of Paul Wiggins of Terlingua.

Store hours are 10 am to 6 pm most days. James may be in town but rarely hangs out at the gallery. Usually he is working in the darkroom or shop and can be easily found. If you call ahead at 432-386-4366 or email at jameshevans@sbcglobal.net he will certainly try to meet with you. Also, right next door to the gallery is Front Street Books, 432-386-4249, someone there will let you in and they can help locate me.

James work has appeared in many national magazines. His work is displayed in collections at The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, The Harry Ransom Center, Austin, The Beaumont Museum of Art, The Longview Museum of Fine Art, The Art Museum of South Texas, The El Paso Museum of Art, The Southwest Texas Writers and Photography Collection as well as many private collections.

James first book of photographs, Big Bend Pictures, designed and edited by D.J. Stout and Julie Savasky at Pentagram, with an introduction by writer and novelist Robert Draper. It was released by UT Press April 1, 2003 and is in its second printing.
