When I first moved to Marathon the money for water utility was collected by Melba. She once owned and operated a bar on South 385 just past the railroad tracks, and it was at this location she lived. People told me when she ran the bar, she didn’t tolerate any crap from her clientele and she talked like a sailor. I mentioned that and she laughed real hard and I got this shot.
Kay Burnett introduced me to Cormac McCarthy. We met him at the Santa Fe Institute, and she debriefed me before we left that he may be outgoing or very reserved and we would have to feel him out, and to keep calm. I brought him my Big Bend Pictures book, and we pulled into the parking lot about the same time and actually met there. So I spilled my whole guts all over his shoes right there in the parking lot in the first minute telling him how much I loved his work and putting my book in his hands. So much for the debriefing. We went inside and he was very sweet and told us some stories, which I can not remember a one. I have to excuse myself about that sometimes, because I find that I am studying faces more than listening to the words. It’s a disorder I have, but it really helps with my portraiture. Anyway, I asked him if I could make his portrait, and he said yes. I also photographed Murray Gell Mann, and a few other scientists.
Thank each and every one of you that has collected my work and supported me over the years. December 28, marks my 30th year living in Marathon. I am so lucky and fortunate to find my life's work at a relatively young age, and pursue it wholeheartedly. The love and compassion I have for the people and landscape of my community keeps me humble. I have made a lot of bad decisions and a few good ones. It is natural. I'm just trying to find my way, and be the best person I can be. Your support has proved that my decision to live here was a good one. You have helped more than you will ever realize. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy full moon.
