Lineaus Lorette and All His Dogs
Lineaus asked me if I would make a portrait of him with his dog Lucy Parsons. Lucy had cancer and was not going to live much longer and so it was. When I crossed into the gate to his home there were plenty of dogs, and this little one was nipping at my heels, but I made it inside and got to the portrait. On the way out I asked Lineaus to sit down and the dogs started to gather around him. I’m looking down through the viewfinder and I see this dog coming for me, and he’s mid air when I snap the shutter and raise my right foot up to stop him. He bounced off my shoe and then left me alone.
Ringtail
I was on an assignment for Texas Monthly to photograph Dickie Del Fiero in Iraan,Texas. Dickie lived in a newer home, but this was the original ranch house, and I wanted to see it. My assistant, Mike Howard was with me and when we went into the screened in porch this ringtail was in there. We really scared it and it stayed in the corner, and would not take his eyes off of me. I asked Mike to go inside the house and look out the window in a sinister way. Mike was my best assistant ever. We always collaborated on assignment photos, and he always said he had the better idea, but I got the credit. I guess that was true sometimes.
