Beaver Moon November 2017
M2M
The 2017 Marathon to Marathon (M2M) on October 21st. was a great success. This year we had 438 registered runners. The day started out cool with fog in the lowlands, and warmed up nicely. It is beautiful to see runners start then thin out into a long line. The marathon winner finished in 2:50.24. My wife, Marci Roberts, tirelessly has organized the event for several years. It is her pride and joy, and the race raised $16,000. for our schools and fire department. Thank you all who attended. We hope to see you next year.
November 22, 1963
There has been several events in my life, that I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when they happened. The space shuttle explosion, in Tomas’ darkroom, 911 in Marathon on the computer in my studio. Man landing on the moon, at 1112 Thurman Street, I was a teenager and watched it with my Mom on TV. John Lennon, in a hotel room in Corpus Christi, talking to my mom on the phone. Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Elvis Presley, Princess Diana, I could go on, but point made. The first one for me was John F. Kennedy. I was nine years old and living in West Virginia. We were in class and it was announced over the PA system that our president had been shot. We were told to lay on our arms and rest our head on the desk, and shortly after that we were sent home. I remember grabbing a couple of pine cones and holding them like pistols and kiddingly saying I shot the president to some of the other kids as we were loading on the bus, my complete innocence still intact. Then the bus driver told me to "SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP.” I think he was crying, but I don’t know if I am imagining that after all these years. When we got home the mood was somber, and the TV was on. I think they had the suspect by that time, but I can’t say I watched it. It was an early day off, it was nice out, and I went out to play. As it all unfolded we watched on television Lee Harvey Oswald get murdered by Jack Ruby. My little brother, who was 7 said he remembered thinking that now we are never going to know what really happened. The president’s funeral procession seemed to go on for days. The air felt thick and chaotic. It was an unhappy Thanksgiving, and even my little self was rattled. Anything can happen and it does. This story is not about politics. It’s about the end of innocence. Oswald stoled that from me and millions of others, and I am sure some of the events I've listed were your firsts. I have tried all my life to hold on to that boy playing in the woods before November 22, 1963. There is a bigger picture that we are not a part of, have no control over, but changes our lives forever. Then, the Beatles came to America. Happy Full Moon.
